6 reasons why blogging is essential for accountants

What is blogging?

Blogging refers to the process of writing and sharing your views online on a certain topic of expertise or interest. It can be as complex or as simple as you wish. However, do keep in mind your target audience!

Who blogs?

Ordinarily, the marketing or the IT department supplies and posts blog pieces. However, in the accounting world, it is best to have accountants write blog pieces as they are the real experts within the field.

When should we blog?

This depends largely on how much time you have. Ideally, you would blog two to three times a week to ensure quality is prioritised over quantity. However, businesses in other industries often blog twice a day, so writing and posting a blog really depends on the time available and the nature  of the topic: is the subject a topical issue, likely to become out of date quickly, or is it one that is not so time-sensitive?

Where are blogs placed?

Technically speaking, they can be housed within your current website or domain, or in a sub-director, depending on your aims i.e. Increase online traffic.

Why?

We list six key reasons below.

  1. Keep your clients updated
  2. Things are changing quickly in the accounting world - especially following the UK’s recent historic vote to leave the European Union. Posting blogs consistently enables you to stay connected to your clients and prospects, as well as informing them of any significant changes.

  3. Brilliant for search engines
  4. When you update your website consistently with new content (blog posts, for example), it is noted by Google bots (these crawl your website), helping to tick the ‘website freshness’ box. This informs Google that you are active, and can potentially give you a competitive advantage over other firms’ websites.

  5. Gain and retain clients
  6. Time is of the essence, so sharing topical and current information will assist in engaging clients and visitors to your site. It is also an opportunity to showcase your firm’s knowledge and professionalism, from which new leads may be generated.

  7. Learn in the process
  8. The majority of individuals tend to retain and challenge concepts when they write and express their own views on a topic. This is the perfect chance to explore your views and discuss any differing viewpoints with colleagues.  This not only creates top quality content for the website but it may also help to assist in your mental process of remembering and retaining key information.

  9. It’s easy and free to set up!
  10. Assuming your firm has a website, adding a blog section would be free, as you would have already paid for the domain and have a hosting service. However, please ensure that this is confirmed with your IT/marketing department (or, alternatively, you could contact us about updating your website and including this feature).

  11. You’ll stand out!

Blogging on interesting and topical issues will ensure that you stand out! But don’t just sit on the idea…. Many firms will be looking at writing and posting blogs to help with their marketing.  A blog will build your personal profile, as well as showcase your knowledge and area of expertise. It’s as simple as that!
