Using LinkedIn as part of your business strategy

18 Oct 2016

It’s time to start thinking of LinkedIn as a marketing tool that can help you to achieve your business objectives, rather than simply as a method of connecting with those who you know in the business world.

LinkedIn is no longer an ‘up-and-coming’ social media network – it has established itself as a powerful and useful business tool. The statistics speak for themselves:

  • Over 13 million people in the UK have a LinkedIn profile, representing 50% of the working population
  • 64% of visits to corporate websites from social media sites come directly from LinkedIn
  • 35% of users access the site daily
  • Currently, LinkedIn has 1.5 million groups
  • Over a period of one month, the average time spent on the LinkedIn website is 17 minutes.

To get the most out of your business’s LinkedIn account, you should invest time on the site to develop your current and potential contact relationships, as well as marketing your brand online. A sound LinkedIn strategy is required to ensure that you are using the service effectively and in a way that will be beneficial to your business.

The obvious starting point is working out what you want to achieve from LinkedIn. For example, are you trying to:

  • promote your profile to potential customers?
  • engage with your current customers?
  • strengthen your business’s image?

If any of the above is true, your starting point will be to become more active on the website.

Commenting on content you find interesting and sharing information that could be useful to your followers are great ways to add personality to your brand. It doesn’t take long to ‘like’ or share content, and you will only need to spend 10-20 focused minutes on the site per week to achieve this.

Having an opinion on topics and being up-to-date on the latest news can also be a great pull for potential clients. If there’s a choice between two competitor firms, the business that actively shares content would probably win the client’s custom, as they are demonstrating that they are knowledgeable in their field.

In the early days of LinkedIn, for many users the primary aim was to create a network of professional business contacts. Dedicating time to developing and engaging with this network is crucial, as you have created a following of individuals who are interested in your business and are more likely to place their trust in you.
